 Coconut oil in bathrub drain
Author: comeoneileen (CA)

Here's my situation - my air conditioner broke down and was nonfunctioning for around nine days. It got extremely warm in my condo, and even warmer upstairs. Bathroom is upstairs, and I keep a jar of normally solid coconut oil in the shower. Because of the high temperature, the cocounut oil liquified, and my cats knocked it into the tub and it ran down the drain. Once my air conditioning was fixed, the temperature returned to normal, and the coconut oil solidified somewhere down in the drain or pipes. The bathtub drain is now completely stopped up. I've tried Draino, I've tried boiling hot water, and I've tried Instant Power Hair and Grease. So far, none of those have worked (the Instant Power is currently just sitting there, visible in the drain). I'm trying to get a plumber to come out tomorrow, but in the meantime, is there anything else I can do on my own?

Think about it.......If it liquefied at say 95*, it certainly should with hot tap water. The problem at this point is getting that hot water down to the clog. You have to wait for the pro to punch it through with a snake, so the hot water can get to it.

The coconut oil would have congealed as soon as it hit the water in the trap, so it is not too far away. Once a hole is punched through it so water can flow hot water will melt it again and flush it away.
