 washing machine drain
Author: harvey angel jr (TX)

My washer drain fills up and over flows, but if I turn the machine off, it reduces and I can turn the machine back on for a while. The plumber looked at it and said a machine had to be taken on the roof and a mechanical motorized snake put in the roof drain, but was unwilling to do this because the house is old and the roof is not sturdy. Another place said they would do it, but wanted $4oo, I can't afford this. I want to know how to clean out this drain myself so the water will flow from the washing machine without having to turn it off repeatedly. Please explain this to me.

first we need to know if there is an available clean out to put a snake wire into.
i suspect that the reason one plumber wanted to go on the roof was because there was not one. ??
my advice is.. if there is no cleanout then have one installed. you need it now and certainly will need it in the future if the pipes are old and prone to clogging..

how do I install one? The guy who looked at it said there was not one, which is why he had tio go through the roof. When I look at the roof vent pipe, it does not proceed directly into the ground. Drain going into ground under kitchen sink which washer drain is hooked to several feet to right of roof pipe. If I break pipe going into ground that comes from sink and which washer and sink are linked to, can I put something in the line that will allow clean outs?

if i understand what you are saying, yes that is where a cleanout would go.
a sawzall and some sheilded rubber couplings will make the installation easy.

you can rent a sawzall at a tool rental center and sheilded rubber couplings and plastic pipe and fittings come from home depot or lowes or youp local hardware store.

cut the vent to the washer drain, call a reputable drain cleaner to cable the drain, then go to your local big box store and buy the aforementioned shielded coupling and install it

You have absolutely NO IDEA how to install a cleanout, and more important WHERE to put it, so call a plumber to install one and clear the drain.
