 Water main to house leak
Author: upstate john (NY)

I have a leak where my main water line coming in from the well is joined to the line going up to the house. However, the area where they are joined is wrapped up in the most cockamamie way I've ever seen. There is a picture here. It looks like foam wrapped up in a soda can and/or bottle. We do have an outside well house, and I did replace the pressure tank last year, so I saw that the line into the house on the tank side was normal. I'm a bit afraid of what i will find inside this mess, which is where the leak is coming from. Any thoughts?

Here is a picture (update: the link is now fixed):

I can't see the picture, but I'd probably make 2 cuts on either side of the "can" and install a new piece of pipe and 2 couplings.

you can safely remove the 'sprite' can and all the other wrappings to expose the pipe. then we can see what is leaking and advise...

I'd say there's a tee, st. 45 , boiler drain, and a gate valve. I'd remove all of those things and replumb with new fittings, ball valve, and 1/4 turn boiler drain.

might just be the packing nut on the (very creatively insulated) valve

simply remove all the 'home made' insulation and have a look-see
