Running Copper Main Thru Original Galvonized Sleeve
Author: Snedmark (NY)

Hello Everyone, I really respect the opinions of this group and was hoping for some knowledge on this archive question. On numerous occasions over the years I (upstate NY) have come across older homes (80-100+ Yrs Old) where at some point plumbers ran a new copper main through the old galvonized pipe in the foundation using it as a sleeve. I know about galvonized corrosion, and I know that is method is no longer used. I know that often epoxy's where used to protect the newer copper as it ran in the sleeve. My question is this? Does anyone know for about how many years this method was used by various plumbers and why is it that after all these years, the various main water lines that I have seen done in this method are still not leaking and have good pressure? And finally, is there any code that mandates replacement of this line if water pressure is satisfactory on this older installation. Thanks for any feedback...
