PIPE size need to run through 2x10
Author: SJErick (NC)

Hello, I am installing a utility sink. The trap will connect to an adapter and then I have 2 options. First I could use a 1 1/2 " waster drain pipe vented with an AAV (Air Admittance Valve) and pass through 3 2x10 with a toal span of 32" with a slope of 1/4 then 90 degree elbow to a main 3" waste pipe another 3 feet away for a run just over 5 feet.

My concern is which would be better to bore a whole 2 1/4 inches in the 2x10 or one to accommodate the 1 1/2" pipe and use an AAV? I have read the 2" will allow for a none vented run. The joist are just supporting the main floor master suite bathroom. the last is actually part of the rim joist on the foundation.

I also want to be sure I am not over looking anything when I plan to tap into the 1/2 pex and place a t in there to run the supply lines for the sinks. Currently the 1/2 supply line comes directly off a 3/4 pex line and supplies the 2 sinks in the master suite. I believe I was told I could supply up to 13 sinks on a 1/2 supply at 45 PSI.

The last thing I will be doing is passing 3/4 pex line through the same rim board the supply to the softner and supply back to the main entry into the system. So, 2 holes. Any recommendations?

If you run 2" it will need to be vented as well. I'd stay with 1 1/2" for a laundry sink drain.
By code you can only have 2 fixtures on a 1/2" pipe, since there's already 2 sinks on the 1/2" pipes, you'll need to run the new sink water supply over to a 3/4" to tie into.

A 2" pipe would need at least a 2 1/2" hole and it would STILL need an AAV. You will NEVER supply 11 faucets with a 1/2" PEX line unless you only use one at time and in that case it doesn't make any difference how many you have.
