The pipe behind the front loading washing machine (which is on the second floor) makes a loud and continuous thumping sound while the washer is not running but only when the central air conditioning comes on. If I stuff a rag in the hole next to the water feed lines for the washer, the thumping instantly stops. Knowing this is some sort of air pressure problem, I tried cutting the vent pipe in order to install another vent in the wall. Cutting the pipe, however, did nothing to stop the thumping. So installing a vent on that line obviously would have no effect. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to correct it? Is it safe to block that hole next to the water feed lines?

IT is the air conditioner's fan creating pressure in the condensate line, and since the trap is not the proper dimension, it is causing the "thump" as the air moves the water up and downin the trap,
