 drain and joist interfernce
Author: RMM2073 (NJ)

My tub drain center is 10" off the wall. The face of double joist below, closest to the drain, is 7 15/16" off the wall. The over flow drain lands on the opposite side of the double joist. Is it better to core through the double joist to make the connection or do I have to cut the joists and re-support? Or is there an adjustable/longer type drain/overflow pipe assembly that extends below the joists?

Isn't the tub you're using an above the floor rough in ? If so the drain can cross over the joist and into the overflow tee.

Yes it is an above floor drain, but the maximum clearance from bottom of tub to top of joist with the leveling legs fully extended is only 1 3/4". For the connection pipe between the drain and the overflow, the joist interferes with the pipe.

Since the joists are doubled, I'd probably make a shallow notch in them so that the pipe can pass over.

Thanks. Is there a maximum depth and width for the notch?

how much can be notched is not that simple.

you can always glue and screw 3/4 plywood on each side and then notch.
