just replaced the expansion tank on my 50 gallon water heater, it was leaking. now the water only reaches lukewarm. how do i get hot water from the system?

one should have nothing to do with the other.
either you closed a valve and failed to open it or you have a recirculating pipe and debris has caused the check valve to stick open ???

The expansion tank has nothing to do with your problem. It's like saying, I repaired a flat tire on my car, and now the car only goes 20 mph.

i know you say they are completely seperate, but all i done was replace the expansion tank. does the air pressure inside the expansion tank have any bearing with the water temperature?

No. The valve for the hot water is not fully opened?
