 existing lead closet flange
Author: Cassix (WA)

Im replacing a closet flange and when I cut into it i realized it is lead from the floor down to the bell about 10 inches down. In the pipe below that it has a drain port on each side about 1 1/2 inches in diameter on each side. One side looks to be the drain for the lav and the other, the tub. Anyways i cut the lead pipe about 2 inches below grade and have very limited space of which to work. I was thinking of using a fernco and transitioning to an abs flange. I know its most likely against code and I doubt it would get a good seal though. Its something i have never dealt with and i cant find anyone that has experience or knowledge with LED pipe. I'm hoping somebody here has the answer any help would be much appreciated.

Lead is too soft to clamp a "Fernco" onto it. That would just crush it. You have to remove the brass "caulking ferrule" from the cast iron and replace it.

a flange that inserts into the pipe will work. get one that has the rubber ribs on the outside.
hopefully you have not removed too much of the pipe.
do lather up the rubber ribs with bowl wax to help it seal.
don't insert it too far so as to block the 1 1/2 openings.
do secure it well to the floor.

I know exactly what your talking about with the rubber insert. Im not a service plumber, but the couple times i have done service work one of the times was with lead and oakum. Ive just never seen a lead flange before and hope never to again. Thanks for the help, keep calm and plumb on.
