Please help! Toilet will NOT drain!
Author: emma13 (NY)

Hi everyone,

I live in an apartment with only one toilet so this is pretty urgent. My boyfriend clogged my toilet and then continued using it, even though he knew it was clogged. I'm beyond angry but that's not the point. It has been two days and the level of water in the toilet bowl is not going down at all. It's right up at the brim. Plunging isn't working. I went out and bought an auger and that isn't working. My landlord isn't reachable until Monday and I have nowhere to go to the bathroom. Please please help me!! I have no idea what to do.

if the toilet is not draining and a plunger and/or a toilet auger does not clear it, it is not the fault of the user.
there is either a clog in the piping below or some object was dropped into the toilet (tooth brush-aspirin bottle) and is stuck in the trapway of the toilet.
there is no way out of this except to call in someone who is experienced and let them diagnose and fix.

If the toilet is stopped due to human waste/toilet paper, plunging or an auger WILL clear the blockage. If it is a foreign object, surrender and call a pro.

This won't be pleasant, but I would remove as much of the solids as you can with gloves to protect your hands and scoop out some excess water/fluids, reaching down into the bottom of the toilet to try and get as much of the blockage out by hand. Then attempt to plunge again. Plunging is the only thing that is going to clear the clog. There are some new types of plungers that might work better than the one you have. But be sure to get as much waste out of the toilet before plunging or you might just compound your problem by pushing more solids into the blocked area. Good luck.

I'd say the auger you bought is too flimsy to do any good. It takes a pretty good quality auger to properly clear a blocked toilet trap. I use one of General's better augers, they cost close to a $100.

I say call your boy friend and have him pay for a plumber to come fix the problem. If he refuses break up with him. Make sure you talk to your landlord too because you might have a clause in your lease preventing you from hiring anyone for repair or maintenance without your landlords approval.
