 Sloan GEM flushometer problem
Author: kchanz82 (NY)

I have an old Sloan GEM flushometer on my toilet that is probably original to when my apt bldg was built in the late 1940s. One day it wouldn’t stop flushing. The piston in the flushometer was no longer working as it should. The metal piece in the piston that keeps the spring in place had broken off. I went to a local plumbing supply store to buy a replacement piston. Sloan no longer makes the original G-75-AC piston and has replaced it with the G-1003-A piston. I bought the G-1003-A piston and installed in my GEM flushometer. When I went to flush it, it did not flush, and made a loud rattling sound as it was trying to reset itself for the next flush. This kept happening over and over again. I made sure to replace the main seat and the inside of the flushometer was free of any obstruction that would prevent the piston from operating as it should. I am fairly certain that G-1003-A piston is the correct replacement part for my flushometer. I am at a lost to why the replacement part is not working. The G-1003-A piston I bought was the water closet version and not the urinal version. Not sure if I should buy the urinal version to see if it will work in my GEM flushometer. Also, would the equivalent piston for GEM 2 flushometer, G-1007-A, work as well in my GEM flushometer? Please advise. Thanks.

Being a plumbing contractor in NYC I still repair Crane, Coyne Delany and Sloan Gem (one of my favorites) if you can't repair the Gem then you may want to go for a Sloan Royal

A Gem flushometer is great but it takes lot of practice to get to work properly
