Rain water coming through old pipe in crawl
Author: wildwood (IL)

Hi,

I just found the source of my flooded crawlspace. Without digging anything out I can see some old clay pipe about a foot below the dirt. We just had a big rain and I could see water gushing into my crawl coming from the side of the pipe, the water included green leaves so most likely means this is coming from the rain sewer system. I don't see the hole yet but I assume there is one near. I was wondering if this was likely the old crawl drainage(the house is from 1960, Illinois) and If I dig it out and find the hole would it be wise to plug it with aggregate or cement? I have a sump next to the area that floods so I don't need it as a drain.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It should not be a clay sewer pipe and you are probably right in that it is an area drain. You need to determine what it drains and replace the pipe with ABS.

I dug out the area and found these drain tiles, I cleaned them up a bit. They are about 10 in (OD) diameter and 12.5 inches long
I could probably pull one up. Any advice on preventing backflow? I believe most of the water flows thru the crack but there appears to be moving water coming from under the pipe. Please see image. Thanks
