Snaking a tub drain with no overflow and non removable strainer
Author: kruss (TN)

So this tub has a non removable strainer/ pop up assembly (got the pop up out but not the bottom assembly,) and no overflow. It's a super old tub. The auger won't fit into the spaces between the cross bars in the drain, and I can't find a way to remove the pop-up assembly. Also, I can't get to the bottom of the tub without tearing up the ceiling downstairs. Any ideas how to get this unclogged without saws-alling the drain? It is fully clogged and all the conventional methods haven't worked so far.

Thanks

Outside of cutting into the drain, you might find out if the tub drain has its own vent. If so, that presents a possibility.

You could try cutting the head off of a 1/4 in cable.

Of course! I didn't even think about that. I'll try it and see what it does Thanks!

What's behind the wall, on the drain end of the tub? Maybe cutting a hole in the wall could give access and is easier to patch? Any chance you have a drum trap?
