At my cottage I have a pump mounted on a tripod about 75yds from shore and sitting about 25-30ft in depth. A line runs from there to my pressure tank and then into the cottage. The pressure tank is set at 18PSI. Cut in is about 20PSI and cut off is set at 40PSI. From my research Im told that there should be no more than 20PSI between cut in and cut off and tank pressure should be around 18PSI so it seems I satisfy all these setting yet when I run the water to shower, fill the sink etc the tank cuts in but then surges until full pressure is restored. Can someone advise if this is normal or is there another adjustment I need to make.

Your pump does NOT start until the pressure drops to 18 psi. Then, when the pump starts the pressure jumps to whatever the pump is supplying while also pressurizing the tank, until the pressure switch, wherever it is mounted, is satisfied and the pump stops.

Thanks and yes I understand this but what Im trying to figure out is why the constant surge to get the pressure back to the 40 PSI. It used to be fine where the contacts would close then open again once pressure level is restored.
