It's this model: [www.whirlpool.com]
It ran for at least an hour or two before I shut it off. It was hot on the inside. Thanks for any help.

Run a cycle see what happens. I'm surprised the heater came on to boost water temp, without water entering machine. There's a heated dry cycle, so I would think there should be some temperature limiter in the machine.

Is it possible that the dry cycle just came on? I'm thinking thats really the only thing that makes sense. I didnt smell any smoke/melting plastic and everything looks ok but I guess we will find out tomorrow.

Since it is not a "portable" model, how did he manage to turn the water off?

Sorry, i meant that the water heater is broken and I will fix it today, and he ran it while that was off/broken/empty, so no hot water.

Not having any water would be bad. Not having hot water is not an issue.

I do believe it is only connected to the hot water, though. Apparently its an efficiency thing.

IF there was water in the pipe, even if it was cold water, there is no problem. IF the water heater was turned off so NO WATER entered the dw, then a lot of things, most of them bad, could have happened. Your explanation of what you mean by "no water" is ambiguous.

Water heater was unfortunately off, so no water, which you said leads to bad things. I just installed the new one and everything is good; I will have to test the DW tomorrow.

That leads to burned out heater elements and damaged water seals on the pump.
