My roommate puts everything down the disposal. After he ground up a spoon the disposal worked but sounded differently...now it's still running, the blades turn, but sounding differently and water is sucked down only to come back up...it looks like a mini tornado moving in and out of the drain and the sink drains SLOWLY but only with the disposal off.
Any ideas? I tried drain 'unclogger' and nothing and it doesn't feel as if anything is caught in the blades.

The water issue is a restricted drain pipe that needs mechanical cleaning. The disposal pumps the water up the vent when turned on and then gravity pulls the water back down. The noise could be a piece of debris still in the disposal or one of the dogs is bent/broken.

Maybe part of the spoon is still in the disposal partially blocking the drain ?

chemicals will destroy the rubber seals inside the disposer. you have shortened its life but your room mate may have already ruined the disposer.
