 Replace leaking wall faucet
Author: sebgraus (NY)

Hi,

I have a leaking wall faucet/hydrant. It's only dripping a tiny bit but I have to fix it. I've managed to turn of the water to the faucet.

I was planning to just remove the faucet and replace it with a new one, however it is totally stuck and it's impossible to screw it off.

I've tried the following to loosen the faucet:

- removed all visual corrotion (there is not much)
- applied heat
- tried to screw in both directions
- applied oil to joints
- tapped it lightly with a hammer

But it's not budging at all, not a single inch. The pipe is also very soft so it bend easily when I use the wrench. I'm starting to think that I need to cut of the pipe and attach a new faucet that way, but I really don't know how to go forth with this.

Do you have any tips? I could even just plug the faucet since I'm not using it, is there a way to do that? Here's a picture so you get the sense:

It is soldered on so you need a torch, and the experience to unsweat and sweat the new one on. IF you try to unscrew i you will damage the piping.

2 choices..
replace the washer in the leaking faucet. OR...
unsolder the 90's and replace with 1/2" copper x 1/2" female drop ear 90's. secure them well to the wall and screw in new faucets.

I'd just replace the washer, it would take about 5 minutes and 25 cents for a washer.
