the upstairs shower has had pressure issues for quite some time.
changed out the diverter coz it was 7yo.
The pressure balancing unit and cartridge (American noStandard) were changed 2 years ago.
The other day, my wife noticed a sticky film on the 1st floor inside wall that is directly under the shower riser. It cleans up easily and is only visible in a certain light and angle, but readably tactile.
There is no sign of a water leak other than whatever the heck this is.
The shower riser is on the outside wall upstairs.
Is there a way to check for a leak without opening the wall? Infrared or some other unusual tool?

the first thing you check is the drain. stuff a big rag in the drain and pour a 5 gallon bucket of water and let it sit. this will check the srain as it attaches to the shower. if no water shows up downstairs, pull the rag and see what that does. important to do this test before the shower has been used.
once you have checked the drain, next test is to remove the shower head, cap the pipe and turn it on. this check the connection behind the wall.
i know of no other non-invasive test..
