I am a hownowner and today I started out to replace my leaking toilet flange. Did all the prep work and pulled the toilet bowl. The wax seal was in rough shape but surrounding the wax seal was a brown granular material about the consistency and feel of coffee grounds. The odor of the material was consistent with the smell of the the toilet and wax ring. I cleaned up this mess and was able to install a new wax ring and restore service to the toilet. However, I am concerned about this material. Is it some form filler? Is it a by product of rotting particle board or plywood? Any thoughts?

Is the floor concrete or raised wood? To me, it looks like ant or termite cast(poop).

Thanks for your interest and reply. It is a wood floor on the second floor of our home.
