Removing trip lever stopper from tub
Author: Danmurphy6 (CT)

Hello plumbers!

My tub has been having draining problems. Tried chemicals and plunging. That worked for awhile, but then it clogged again and us very sluggish draining again now.

So I tried to snake it, but it seems the snake can't get past the trip lever mechanism when entering through the drain or the overflow hole.

So I'm trying to remove the trip lever mechanism. I tried removing the overflow cover and pulling it out that hole for more hours than I care to admit with no luck. The problem seems to be that:

The trip lever mechanism that runs vertically down the overflow pipe is attached to a horizontol rocker arm that runs to the drain. All parts are metal, seemingly making it impossible to remove.

Any ideas or clues are welcome! Thank you in advance. Photos

You have a waste with an integral linkage. The only way to remove it is to disaasemble the waste at the back of the tub.

Super helpful. Thank you!

There is a wooden panel in the hallway wall where the back of the tub is. I removed it and located the trap. Should I start by removing and cleaning the trap? Any other tips? Recommended tools?

Should I call in a pro? I'm nearly an uneducated but persistent amateur.

Removing the trap may be all you need to do. By reaching up thru the waste tailpiece, you may be able to reach the hair clog and pull it out. There is a spring coil at the end of the linkage that actuates the stopper and it catches hair on it.
