 Leaky pex fittings
Author: EddieV (NC)

Hello all, I have an issue with my pex fittings in our 10 year old home.
Over the last 5 years I have had 3 different leaks in the 1/2" pex water lines. In all instances the culprit was the brass fittings (2 tees and 1 elbow).
There seems to be a calcification? buildup around the area on the fitting of the crimp.
I noticed today in the basement that this happening on the 1" supply line and fittings. The buildup is present as is a slight water drip/leak. In touching the area, it has the feel of a slippery substance.
Does anyone know if this is a zincification of the fittings or is my well water contributing to this?
I am planning to have my water tested as next step.
Thank you, Ed

Zurn had some issues with their brass pex fittings several years ago. Are your fittings Zurn ? Definitely have your water tested, I'd just about bet it has a high P.H. that's contributing to the fitting failures. I have replaced all the brass pex fittings with polymer fittings in homes where the owner was unable / not going to use a softner to correct the water condition. That stopped the leaky fittings, but left valves, faucets, etc to suffer the high P.H.

Thank you! I will have it tested.
I have seen online the Zurn problems. I'm not sure if they are Zurn but will check.
