 water heater T & P relief valve

My T & P relief valve is leaking. I can't reach a plumber until Monday. Can I drain the water heater below the relief valve and continue using the water heater a few days?

Any recent changes to the plumbing in the house? Draining it should work great. How do you plan on keeping it at that level?

No recent changes. It is an old water heater. I just need to stop the leaking in my garage, and it is filling 5 gal buckets every 2-3 hrs. I plan to turn it back on when hot water is needed until I can get a plumber out

Yes you can continue to use it if you turn it off after you use it. If you have a Pipe Wrench, you can replace it your self, but turn the temperature down to 120 degrees or just warm. That may help. But if it is a seat problem you should just replace the Pressure Temperature Relief Valve. It is a 3/4" pipe thread. Drain it down below the relief outlet. With a 14 or 18" Pipe wrench, remove it and replace it with a new one. Put teflon tape and pipe dope on the threads when you install it. Good luck.
