Moved into new home. Water usage seemed crazy high. Local Water Authority came out to do audit--no known leaks found but seems there is high usage at certain times of day--@6am. Don't know what could cause this. Sprinklers-on well water; radiant heat-seems fine; 2 water heaters; pool & sauna--but no automatic timers on them; swamp coolers--but not turned on. Real mystery and just perplexed. Not sure how to find source of this high usage.

I know it is not always easy, but can you perform a daily recording of your usage, off the meter. This way you will know your exact usage. Toilet valves are normally the fault unless there is a leak.

since a toilet leak is about the easiest one to diagnose, I would assume the utility's "inspection", even if very cursory, would have found it.

Yes, water audit did not find anything unusual. Also, the water usage comes on somewhere typically between 4 to 6am - volume of water used is @ 600 gallons at one time! Can't think of anything--we don't have a water softener or anything like that. If any system was using that much water and had a leak, it would be discovered.

Is it possible the city water is being used to replenish the water in the well ?

Mystery solved: Part of the sprinklers on well; another part on city water. Not sure why...I guess we will look into converting everything to well. We thought everything on well.
