Moving a well head?

We have a modern drilled well that extends about 18 inches above grade. It's a bit had getting around it on our driveway, and I wonder if it is possible to put a wellhead underground, or move a wellhead (without redriling a new well.)

I suspect that codes require the head be above grade to prevent contamination, but wonder if there is a way to seal it completely to make it safe for burial.

Alternatively, I wonder if the well casing can be elbowed to run horizontally 20 feet underground, and then emerge in a more convenient spot.

Author: North Carolina Plumber (NC) No, there would be no way to install or remove the pump and drop pipe if the well casing were 90'd over. An underground well head is also a violation in my area. Back in the 40's and 50's they used to cover well heads but now if we find one we have to extend it above ground, for ease of servicing and to prevent contamination.
