While replacing a bathroom faucet I attempted to remove the

old cutoff, the thing snapped off leaving only 1 or so threads on a

the pipe. The pipe is about 1.5 inches out of the wall.I could attempt

to unscrew the stub but I fear it would snap off behind the wall and

then I would have to tear out the wall. It is 1/2 inch iron pipe. Do

you know of something I could couple to the pipe and then put a cutoff on

using another piece of pipe.I am currently using a PVC compression

coupler from Lowe's, but do not have much faith in it. We intend on

tearing the bathroom out and remodeling in the next year. Thanks in advance

Go ahead an try to unscrew it, it if breaks off, open the wall and deal with it there. If you are uncomfortable with this work, hire a plumber and turn it over to an expert. Millions of folks are paying a price for the acceptance of galvanized pipe back in the day...

Use the PVC dresser coupling that you bought. It may look flakey but it will work until you remodel.

I am a fellow DIYer and have ran into this a few times.

A lot depends on how the elbow & piping behind the wall is supported. If its a drop ear 90 and screwed into something solid you most likely can back out your galvanized without risking too much. If its an elbow with a female adapter loosely strapped you could snap the pipe or twist the pipe and create a bigger mess. You may want to enlarge the hole where the galvanized nipple sticking out, just enough so you can put a pencil flash light to see how it looks behind the wall...the enlarged hole still small enough to be covered by the escutchoen.
