Cast iron vent pipe hits wall

Hi Guys,
This sounds kind of crazy, but after pulling the Sheetrock off a wet wall in my master bath, I'm now seeing that the hub section of 4" vent pipe sticks out about 1/2" beyond the studs. That is to say, I'm unable to hang new drywall without it hitting the cast iron. The only thing I can think of is that the old drywall had a relief cut into its back side, but I threw it out so I'll never know. I know this all sounds kind of stupid, but I'm stumped as to how it was done. I don't remember anything odd about the wall before I tore it down. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Author: steve (CA) It's not an uncommon thing to come across, when doing remodel work. Either plow out the back of the drywall or you could cut out the hub and a little more pipe, and insert a short piece of pipe with shielded couplings. The couplings will have a smaller OD than the hub.
