Cast iron vent pipe hits wall
Author: Szicree (CA)

Hi Guys,
This sounds kind of crazy, but after pulling the Sheetrock off a wet wall in my master bath, I'm now seeing that the hub section of 4" vent pipe sticks out about 1/2" beyond the studs. That is to say, I'm unable to hang new drywall without it hitting the cast iron. The only thing I can think of is that the old drywall had a relief cut into its back side, but I threw it out so I'll never know. I know this all sounds kind of stupid, but I'm stumped as to how it was done. I don't remember anything odd about the wall before I tore it down. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Steve

It's not an uncommon thing to come across, when doing remodel work. Either plow out the back of the drywall or you could cut out the hub and a little more pipe, and insert a short piece of pipe with shielded couplings. The couplings will have a smaller OD than the hub.

Remove the dry wall at the hub and perfatape over it.
