Sometimes, but not all, there's a sewer gas smell when the washing machine is running. I regularly drain and clean the machine filter (Kenmore) and also run Tide HE washing machine cleaner each quarter.
I believe the smell is coming from the discharge drain pipe where the machine's drain hose goes in. I don't understand, though, as I thought it would have to have an S-trap to prevent this.
The machine drains fine, never had any water backup from the pipe.

It is pretty amazing to see the biofilm buildup inside a washer when it's taken apart. The only thing you might try is a more aggressive cleaning schedule.

maybe biofilm in the stand pipe itself. Could use a diluted bleach solution and some type of brush to scour it clean.

Thanks m&m and pipe runner for the suggestions. I'll try a monthly cleaning of the washer and also brush the stand pipe with diluted bleach and see what happens. Will report results.
