I find it a royal pain to try and line up the flange bolts while holding up a heavy toilet on installation. I have an apartment building and have to do this quite frequently especicially when I replace the vinyl flooring.

Are there any good tricks to making this happen easier?

assuming you are using the plastic push on 'bolt keepers' - NO

you may pencil the outline of the bowl on the floor to act as a target

put tape on the floor next to the bolts and then line up the toilet's holes with the tape and set it down.

Ditto to HJ. Many bolt packages come with 4 nuts and washers to tighten down to hold the closet bolts upright and this also prevents them from turning when you tighten the finish nut over the Cap holder that hides the nuts. Use those every time you can. I always carry extras packages of closet bolts and some that are longer than normal just in case. Also, When I have to use 2 wax rings, I also mash them together a little while I spread the opening so that any mashed wax does not interfere with the flush.

Get extra-long bolts (solid brass) and lock them to the ring w/ nuts and washers. You will find the bolt holes before you schmucked the wax.

I like to double nut & washer to hold the bolt to the flange too, but I apply anti seize or faucet grease to hopefully allow for easier removal in the future if the bolts need to be replaced. Have had to deal with that in the past requiring flange replacement due to bolts being corroded, nuts rounded off and spinning etc. I know it all pays the same but the less time I have to spend dealing with old closet flanges the better I like it
