 Moen cartridge
Author: okiegirl (FL)

Hello, I have been trying to remove a Moen 1222 cartridge for days. I followed the instructions and removed the horseshoe clip and used the plastic "tool" to loosen the cartridge but it will not come out. I called Morn and they told me to get a cartridge puller which I did. That was useless. I tried once more pulling straight out on the stem which broke off and now there is nothing to grip onto. Any help at all would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!????????????

Unfortunately, you are finding out what we plumbers have been dealing with for years now when it comes to the 1222 cartridge. And there are no magic bullets or wands. I had your same experience the last cartridge I dealt with and this is what worked that time: using a 6" snub nose ViseGrip locking plier, I grabbed the squared face on the cartridge and locked down on that. Then I rotated the cartridge between the 10 and 2 o'clock position while pulling straight out. This one cooperated and slid out, but as stated, no guarantees.

Every one is different and you have to try various means to grab and turn it while pulling. Two of my most recent ones were NOT removable and I had to replace the valve in the wall.
