drain if floor under utility sink
Author: plumbinglady62 (IA)

My husband who is gone now had rigged up the utility sink in the basement so it was draining in a hole in the floor underneath. When I would use the sink the water would overflow onto the floor. Is this a proper way or do I need to install new pipes in the wall? The shutoff for the water are above the sink. I have a new utility tub I want to install. What do I need to do?

Tips to install utility tub

1. Set the utility sink in place against the wall where the rough plumbing drain is installed

2.Buy a P-trap

3.Put the vertical opening of the P-trap under the drain pipe in the bottom of the utility sink and mark the point where the horizontal pipe meets the rough drain pipe.

4.Disconnect the horizontal pipe and slip it over the rough drain pipe.

5.Connect the P-trap to the sink drain pipe and the elbow from the rough drain.

There is One Right Way and there are lots of wrong ways, when performing plumbing tasks. "Rigging" plumbing into a hole in the floor is NOT the way to go.

Do it right... the 2nd time and have peace of mind. Consider having a licensed plumber come in and do a "look see" and suggest the right way according to local plumbing codes. "Rigging" may cause other issues and may require removing before you ever decide in selling your house.

Best Wishes

I was okay with # 1 & 2, but when I came to # 3, 4, & 5, you lost me because I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to do. What "rough pipe"? And how would the "horizontal pipe slide into the rough pipe"?
