We are installing a new, deeper kitchen sink and garbage disposal. Because of the configuration of the pipes, the garbage disposal cannot hang straight. The 1.5 inch copper drain pipe is in the way and prevents us from installing the garbage disposal. The same pipe that is in the way is the pipe we need to use to hook up the disposal. Please see attached photo. Is this something I can DIY or do I need to call a plumber?

cut the 1 1/2 inch copper back a short distance and use a mission or fernco type sheilded rubber coupling to transition from 1 1/2 inch copper to 1 1/2 inch PVC. from there it is easy.. new trap etc.

You can add a wye or tee cleanout with a clean out plug and roll it up slightly and use a 45 or a 22 1/2 if you need to.

Ex app- rolling a fitting up as you suggest would isolate the trap arm from the vent. The trap arm cannot change planes.

Have you done much plumbing around your house or other houses? If so how did it go?
Depending on your skill level you could whip it out in a few hours or it go on for weeks
The good news for you is that if you decide to take on the project the pros here are more
than willing to help.

I know you can t angle the whole fitting on the trap arm but you can have the plug up at a 45 and use a fitting to offset the pipe away from the wall.

ex.. the reality is that the whole rest of the country allows a trap adapter (what we in MA call a destanko) to be installed on the outlet side of a trap. there is no need for a cleanout (as we are required to install) because the toy trap can be easily removed for full access to the drain for cleaning.

How do you run water while the drain is being snaked with out a clean out. I know in Mass we cant use trap adaptors on the sewer side and can be treaded, glued, or no hub connection.

1l The garbage disposer, (NOT a "Disposal", MUST hang straight, otherwise you may never get it installed
2. If something is keeping the disposer from hanging straight the vibration when the disposer is running will be very noisy
3. IF you do not know how to adjust the pipes to make room, especially since you are working with copper drain lines, you very well may need a plumber.

Looks like the copper supply lines are also in the way of your disposer. There are many ways to route those lines to make more room.
I have seen those drains. I think hj told me once they are LA Pattern Trap right?
