 Septic Tank Distance from House
Author: Dan0 (TN)

I want to widen my front porch from 6' to 10'. My septic tank is 12' from the front porch... making it 18' from the house. Would there by any problem with the wider porch?

Thanks

It will be up to the local health dept. You need to seek their approval before you proceed.
Here in NC , the tank being 12' from the porch would be fine.

Well widening the porch will put it 8' from the front of the porch. We are just in the planning stage right now. I'm going to prepare a site drawing... but I don't want to waste my time though, if it's an obvious problem. The house is 18' from the tank... and that's not going to change, I just don't know if the front of the porch is that important.

Thanks

IT should be okay as long as the porch is not on top of the tank.

One might assume that since a porch is an open area that it would be OK, but I believe the Bldg Dept will also consider that in the future you might want to enclose that porch making it not in compliance. You really do need to address this with the Bldg Dept prior to construction of the extension of the porch. I would get an OK in writing as you will probably have to disclose this in a sale of your property. You are doing the right thing to investigate before you spend your hard earned bucks. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies! Talked to the inspector today... sounds like we should be fine in our case. Our field lines are down hill from the house and pretty far away. I'll go ahead with my site plan and get it all documented.

Thanks again!
