Mobile Home Hot Water Heater/ a must? & propane conversion..
Author: Pneuma (WA)

Hello Everyone!

What is the reason for the mobile home specific hot water heaters.. Is there a problem installing a standard tank?

Also, Is every gas tank capable of converting to propane with the right kit.. and is it very specific or can we use an old one from a used tank?

Thanks Everyone!

Because a mobile home water heater is in a closed closet, it must get its combustion air from outside the home. This is done by a means not used by conventional gas water heaters and cannot be circumvented.

Gas water heaters are sold and installed for the gas supplied to the house. They are not converted in the field.

1. Usually a mobile home heater has a retaining strap to secure it during transport
2. MOST manufacturers do NOT make a conversion kit. When you change to propane, you need a thermostat with a higher pressures setting which means it will have left hand burner tube connections, The new burner tube, and a cast iron or stainless steel burner, along with the smaller orifices.

Very few mobile home heaters are "direct vented". The closets have air inlets and outlets for combustion gases.

In Washington state LABOR&INDUSTRIES governs all work associated with manufactured and mobile homes!!!!! That is the #1 reason the tanks are a little different then the answers you've received are somewhat correct??
And yes you may convert almost any natural gas water heater to propane but purchase the manufactures kit no universal!! This is why you read about mobile home fires
Good luck
