 toilet not shutting off
Author: fujiyama17 (DC)

Hello -

If anyone can help or offer advice, I would really appreciate it! I have a toilet that has two buttons on top, one for a full reservoir flush, and the other a half. It looks like this:

Here is another image

So here is the problem. When the reservoir fills up, the bobber on the left lifts, and when it reaches the top of its pole, the water is supposed to shut off. It doesn't. It doesn't even if I lift the bobber a bit more myself - that would be an easy fix. It doesn't leak, so I don't think it is a flapper issue (and if it was, I don't know how to get to the flapper...). The water just keeps running, and I have to shut it off from the main pipe under the toilet.

Here is a picture of where the water spouts out from:

It doesn't come out as fast when the reservoir is full, but it does keep on running.

Can someone direct me as to how to fix this? Thank you in advance!

You can either replace the seal in the fill valve (bobber) which is located under that black cap or the whole fill valve.

Your problem is more than likely the fill valve, or what you call the bobber. Looks like your water might be a bit hard due to the white build up on your flush valve and other internal parts of the toilet. If you pop the black cap on the fill valve you may be able to replace the seal. If that doesn't work then replace the whole fill valve (where the water comes in to the toilet...the black apparatus on the left.)

SHEPLMBR70 was spot on. It was the rubber piece inside the fill valve (the black mechanism on the left). Apparently a little piece of debris/rock/something was in there causing the fill valve to remain open and not shut off the water.

I cleaned the rubber piece and the mechanism, put it back together, and now the water shuts off. Yay!
