Hello Experts,
My sump pump pit is empty, there is no water in it, yet there is a clear water stream that runs through the pump and empties into the pit. The float is just dangling but still works as when I pick it up/raise it it kicks on the pump and the pump starts sucking air (as there is no water in the pit). Judging by the advice from the basic internet search most are commenting that the water table is high and is causing this, however I would assume if water table was high then I would have water in the pit. Please let me know what you think given this information.
Thank you!

Hello,
Yes, there is no water in the pit. The water stream coming out from the bottom of the pump into the pit and it all just drains. But the pump is making noise like it is working although obviously it is not sucking water but instead running it into the pit. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you!

a bad switch or bad float.
Pull the plug and wait some time and see how high the water is.
Best Wishes

I pulled the plug and the water came up about half way up the pit. I then plugged it back in and the water went down although not all the way down. It is still about a quarter to a fifth of the pit full. The pump however stopped running water. Looks like I'll need to start trying replacing parts or the whole thing. If any other ideas/suggestions come up please post them as I sure will appreciate anything that could help us save some $ here.
Thank you

Your check valve in the output line may be stuck, broken, or have some debris in it. That would let water left in the line when the pump shuts off to flow back into the pit. This makes the pump run more frequently as it has to pump the same water more than once.
