Brass tailpiece without threads connecting to PVC P Trap in Floor - No Accessible
Author: chiprock (MN)

All, I installed a clawfoot tub that has the supply and waste exposed. For the waste I had the metal tailpiece going thru the floor into a pvc trap adapter using a compression fitting, then on to a glued trap, all of which was under the floor. This was OK as it was all accessible thru my unfinished basement.

Problem: I am finishing my basement and I don't want to leave a compression fitting in a space that I won't have access to. Also I would rather not leave a access panel.

Question: How do I transition from my un-threaded tub tailpiece to a Glued PVC trap without using a Compression fitting?

Below is a product very simililar to what I have.

Thanks in advance for the help!

You don't and you shouldn't.

When you 'sheetrock' the ceiling leave a section between two joists the size of an access door untaped and screwed (not nailed).

After you tape the rest but before you paint you merely glue up a trim frame as flat as you like to cover the seam(s).

The 'access' will almost disappear, but will be there for any future repair.

I guess if I am sheetrocking I may has well do it up front instead of cutting a access later (or for the next guy). Tks for the advice.

Good to know I wasn't missing something with the transition from brass to PVC. After the hours I spent staring at fittings I thought maybe I was just a little slow... smile

you use a trap adapter for that concealed connection just like hundreds of thousands of others have done.

Like the normal kind with the compression fitting? Like I used every where else (including this instance)?

Or are we talking about a different part?

That's the part, but the threads should extend just above the finished floor at the tub. I believe you have the trap adapter too low.
Whenever I rough in a claw tub over an inaccessible location, I let the 1 1/2" pipe extend above the floor and cut it off to the correct height when actually setting the tub.

You may cover the above floor connection with a 'box escutcheon'.

@North Carolina Plumber (NC) - Ahhh... that makes a ton of sense. Thanks for helping me connect some dots here.

@bernabeu (SC) - I think I have this piece already. It was included in the set, I just didn't realize what it was suppose to be used for.

Thanks to all for the help on this!!!!!!
