Exhaust vent for hot water tank
Author: joelabel (CA)

Bought this 2 story building a year ago and have a hot water tank in a closet on the 2nd floor. The exhaust vent for the tank routes about 10 feet on an angle before penetrating the roof, and I don't see any reason or obstacle that would prevent venting it straight up and out through the roof. I don't know if this is a problem but the rooms around the hot water tank have a bad odor. Should I replumb the vent straight up and out, you thoughts?
Thanks,

odds are it is fine the way it is. To be sure put your hand around the draft hood when the heater is running, if no heat is spilling out around the draft hood ( a little during start up is normal and should stop after a minute or two) then leave it the way it is.

It may have been routed this way so its not seen from the front of the house.
