I have lived in this house now for 44 years & starting last year my basement toilet has started back flowing during a rain storm. The basement sewer does not back up and neither do the sinks, just the toilet. What can be causing that to happen now. It there some sort of equipment I can get to plug up the toilet during rain storms???

if you wanted to break the floor and fix it properly, you may be able to install a backwater valve.

A plug will only create back pressure and further damage.... somewhere at the weakest point of your plumbing. You have have a backflow valve installed on the outside of your house to prevent backflow when the sewerline begins back up. It will allow normal flow after the water levels have returned to normal.
Best Wishes
