thermal expansion tank on water heater
Author: donnagag (DC)

Just had a thermal expansion tank installed along with a new water heater. The tank is installed next to the pressure regulating valve(pressure was 93), which is next to the backflow valve, all on the house side next to the meter. I thought it would be next to the water heater. If water enters and leaves this tank it could recirculate to the kitchen faucet, etc - could it somehow contaminate that water? If it is right next to the water heater on the cold pipe there is no chance for it to mix with the cold kitchen water as it would just go back into the water heater. Maybe just worrying about nothing.
Thanks

The tank is designed for potable water so there's nothing to contaminate your water. The water will enter and leave the tank as the pressure builds and subsides with the thermal expansion due to the water heater.

THERMAL EXPANSION TANK SHOULD BE INSTALLED ON COLD SIDE OF WATER HEATER

It is AFTER the water meter, which by definition IS ahead of the water heater.

You are right, but then, WHY did you post your reply in all caps, as if the original installation was incorrect and should be changed?
