We had a leak in a pipe between the pump and the house and fixed it. Now the pump (a 30/50) comes on, goes up to 50, shuts off, falls quickly to 40, them comes on again. Up to 50, down to 40. Over and over.

We walked the plumbing lines and couldn't find any other leaks than the one we fixed.

If we leave the pump on and turn the water on in the house, it had good pressure. We usually lose pressure when there's aleak.

You are right! We had someone come out to look at it this morning and that's what it is.

It was a bad check valve.

Could be a failing checkvalve in the pump. Many installers will put a backup one on the pump. The leak does not always have to be in the ground....
I really need to read these all the way before posting

Sounds like you found a leaky check valve. However, your problem as described could be a water logged tank. This could be caused by the bladder leaking into the air side. Most cases require a new tank unless you are lucky enough to have a replaceable bladder. If there is water coming out of the air fitting when you press the center of the "tire valve", the bladder is shot for sure.
