We have a fiberglass shower stall with separate hot and cold controls. A couple of days ago I noticed the hot water handle and pipe have shifted into the shower, so now there's a gap between that handle and the face of the tub enclosure. I grabbed the handle/pipe and tried to move it (thinking it might rock back and forth) but it doesn't move at all. Any idea what would cause this to shift and what can be done to fix it? We can't use the shower with this exposed hole into the wall. The other side of the wall (behind handles) is drywall.
BTW, the cold water tap is still flush with the face of the tub enclosure.
Thank you,
Vicki

it sounds like some blocking that holds the valve in place has slipped. if so, it needs to be raised back up and re-secured. it is more work to open up a hole and repair the hole than it is to reach in and fix the problem...

You need to take the handle and plate off the faucet, shine a light back in the hole and take a look see. You may be able to cut a wooded shim to reposition the valve body in the correct position.
It's also possible that the plastic trim ring has shifted slightly off center and fallen into the hole, in that case you would only need to loosen the plate and slid the valve body back into position and retighten the screws.

Thank you so much for the reply. My husband had time today to try to fix the shower handle. As he started to turn the plate/neck so he could look into the hole, he realized that this piece has been moving/unscrewing from the wall a little bit every time we operate the hot water handle. He simply tightened it up and it's now flush to the wall and just need a new line of caulk around it. YAY! Had it been the problem you described, we thought the drywall would need to be cut open since the hole was so small. Anyway, thanks again. Just wanted to let you know what he discovered.
