 sink basket.
Author: ex apprentice 28 (MA)

What is the best way to tighten a sink basket without ripping the paper and rubber gasket? I used a less expensive basket and the rubber didn t push against the bottom so I bought a more expensive brass basket and used a basket wrench to hold back and a big pair of channel locks and it tightened and the gasket ripped but it doesn't leak.

I thought a brass friction ring was used on the better sink baskets, instead of plastic or paper.

I could have used a double basket type with a smaller nut to make it easyer to tighten but its only a old ss sink.

i use silicone caulk on the top and grease on the bottom. just have to get the cheap strainer slightly past hand tight and it won't leak. (thamks to the silicone)..

The rubber and paper UNDER the sink have nothing to do with it not leaking. The seal is on top of the sink and the silicone or plumber's putty seals that.

I take those out, I do not INSTALL them.

What is wrong with them? I have installed hundreds of them.

I assume that this is the assembly with the conical sheet metal spacer sandwiched between the sink bottom and the 1 1/2 threaded brass nut.
