 Solder type union
Author: doogdoog (HI)

Aloha,
I am not a plumber and have some questions about solder type copper/brass unions. I have a solar panel that is leaking and want to remove one of the two panels so I can repair it. I want to temporally remove the bad one so I have to make some bypass fittings. The solar panel has copper/brass unions but it seems that the output of the panel and the input of the panels have different type of unions. These are 1" unions but the threads are different. The output union has a fine thread and the input union has coarse thread. This is very confusing and is this because of different brand unions? How am I able to purchase these unions with different threads.

Thank you,
doogdoog

There is no thread standard when it comes to union manufacturing. To do what you are trying to do, you will need to match the manufacturer to the union you currently have.

Even unions by the same manufacturer could have different threads if they decided to change their patterns to save material.

Thanks m&m (MD) & hj (AZ)

That is what I am afraid of, different thread sizes, so I guess I will have to make the rounds looking for the right union.

When you find one be sure to try BOTH sides of the union, because one with a "close" thread may fit one side but not the other.
