 Outdoor Pipes
Author: skaskecher (NY)

Our pipes were not winterized this year and we now have a pipe that burst near the garage. Our plumber shut off the water valve. He said that at this point this can not get worse and said we could technically just wait until spring to fix the problem. Is this true? Can the problem not get any worse? Since nothing was winterized I have hard time believing this is true. Dont want anything else to burst/crack.

if the pipes are full of water and have frozen then you must warm up the building to thaw them before they can be drained or blown out with air pressure.
of course there could be further damage but you may be in for a complete repipe anyway.

If it was water supply to an exterior faucet/hydrant, I agree.

Nothing else can happen to THAT pipe, because it is turned off. BUt that has nothing to do with other pipes freezing.

We would also suggest to install a freeze protection valve during spring to avoid the recurrence of freezing in pipes.
