No water after 1 week vacation. Not sure if frozen or lost prime
Author: fury.s (Non-US)

We have been gone for a week and power was off at some point for an hour or 2. No water coming out of taps after first dribbles but hwh is full and it is very warm under house. How can we tell if and where water is frozen or if we have lost prime

Assuming you have a private well, there is probably an electrical or mechanical issue but you have provided very little info.

Your pump pushes water into a tank. Somewhere near the tank, usually at the base, there is a hose bib. Attach a hose to it and run off 10 or so gallons if possible and see how the pump performs. If all good, move farther upstream and again, see what you get.

As far as we know there is no bib on pressure tank. We plan to add a tap at this point in system so possibly we should cut hose now and add it to see if pump works...?
Oh! We found frozen portion of line in pump house. We r going to turn heat way up and try to thaw..maybe also we can cut line there and add methyl hydrate. Any other ideas?

When pump does run, do you have water anywhere in house?

Seems as though you have your diagnosis.

Heat Cord (NOT HEAT TAPE) should be on your bucket list to prevent this from happening again.

The difference between heat tape and heat cord by Frostex, is night and day. I suggest that you google the manufacturer and see for yourself.

One of the remarkable difference is heat tape must be installed inline and secured. The whole tape heats up and cannot be covered with insulation.

Heat Cord, by Frostex, can be wrapped several times over the same pipe and can be covered with foam insulation. As the temperature drops only the area were freezing is occurring, will heat up. Again, its worth your personal research.

Best Wishes
