Removing remaining water from hose bib lines
Author: gbonawitz (PA)

I have some cpvc pipes leading to a hose bib that most years still freeze and cracks even though I drain it. Does anyone know if they make cpvc bleeder valves that I can use to let some air in to remove any vacuum holding water in the pipe? I've looked but can't find any.
Thanks

You need a valve that incorporates a drain port. There's a couple different varieties. Make sure the drain port is on the downstream side when installing. If the piping is exposed, you might consider sharkbite fittings. Merry Christmas!!!!

you might be able to use a shop vac stuck over the hose end of the sillcock. it may get enough water out?
as suggested, a shut off with a drain in it will help if the pipes don't sag near the outside.

It is not just "vacuum" causing your problem. Hose bibbs are not designed to drain ALL the water out of the pipe, even if the vacuum is broken.

Correct, a tee with with a Schrader valve downstream of the water valve will allow you to inject a shot of air to remove any water standing in the pipe. $20 worth of parts including a bicycle tire pump would give you peace of mind as far as having any burst pipes.

Instead of a shraeder valve on the tee, install a drain valve. It will be more positive draining than depending on air blowing all the water out.
