The last few years I have had several situations where the city sewer has backed up, due to tree roots downstream from my property. In all but one case, this was discovered before any issues at my house, because there was sewage spilling out of a manhole on the city sewer. However, the last time this happened I also had sewage come out of a toilet on the first level -- probably because the manhole lid was closed tighter this time and did not allow water to escape. Strangely, I don't think any water came out of the shower drain, which is two inches above floor level in the same room as the toilet.
Here's a diagram. The cleanout can be seen just outside the structure, on the left side:
I am working on the city to put the line on regular maintenance, but would also like to install a pop-up cap on the cleanout, which is located outside the structure. The top of the cleanout is below the toilet spill level, but a couple of inches above the shower drain. I have the following questions:
1. Which of the two products is better? The first one is a lot cheaper, so I would rather go with that, if they are equally effective:
Ez-Flo 43511 sewer relief valve: [ecx.images-amazon.com]
Amazing sewer popper: [ecx.images-amazon.com]
2. Even if the shower did indeed not overflow for some reason, I would be more comfortable if the popup cap was below the level of the shower drain. How difficult is it to lower the top of the cleanout? Is it just a matter of cutting below the threaded top and attaching a new one with ABS solvent cement? I realize I will need to dig a little bit, but it would be easy to drain any backflow water, because it's on a slope.
Here's a photo of the cleanout:
3. How is it possible that the shower did not backflow, when the toilet, whose lip is about a foot higher, did?
Thanks!

Just cut the riser in two places, remove the middle piece and reinstall with an ABS coupling.

Thanks for the responses!
Any opinions on the backflow preventions caps I specified? It may not be clear, but each of them had a link to the product page on Amazon next to the name.
