I'm building cabinets for a Wolf 6 burner gas range. It is going to be installed in an island with cabinets next to and behind it. Someone told me I needed non-combustible material behind the range, is this true? The cabinets on the sides are wood and I know there is no issue with that. I previously had it up against a wall with drywall behind it. Since its now an island with a cabinet behind it too will that be an issue? It will have granite counter top all around, so I'm not concerned above the counter, just below. Is there any code issues I need to be aware of? I'm in San Diego, CA. thanks

Follow manufacturers instructions. Maybe this time anyway Of course it may be OK, the stove doesn't get as hot as it's suppose to anyway.

The manual doesn't say anything about below counter, it only covers above counter requirements. I called a Wolf representative, but he didn't know and had to look it up. After a few minutes he said that there shouldn't be an issue because the stove is insulated. However he would recommend non-combustible material since the gas hook up is there. But he didn't know if there were CA specific codes.

You can purchase 33-36 x 30-36 stainless steel panels that can be attached to your back and side walls. In your case, just the back wall. Its available in brush or semi-gloss finishes. Wolf and Viking ranges are much more insulated then they were years ago. I believe you will be ok. Are you also installing the overhead funnel exhaust system, vented outside?
Best Wishes

The area below the cooking surface (top of the side panels) is rated for installation adjacent to standard combustible building materials and cabinetry.
Above that level, follow the design guidelines of the manufacturer.
-Of course, local codes may supercede.
-Make sure that you follow the instructions for opening size and supply locations.
