Author: tkirish (MA)

I'm adding 3 new radiators to my basement and need some advice on Pex.
1. Do I need to use 3/4 orange pex or is 1/2 inch ok ? I have a 2 zone system (old basement zone currently capped)

Approx 12 ft in main rm. 6-8 in adjoining office and 4-6 in bathroom.
So 24-28 ft. Total.

YOu have to use oxygen barrier PEX, and I am not sure if orange pex is that or not.

1/2 inch pex will be fine. use a taco 0015 circulator. it has 3 speeds so it can be adjusted to suit the situation.
orange pex does have the required oxygen barrier.

I'd be concerned with velocity noise with 1/2" and a 0015. Even on its lowest setting. I'd probably spend the extra money and put a Taco VT2218 in there. Set it for a 20* delta t and forget it.

paul, i had a call for non heating thru 2 kickspace heaters. other plumbers used those (modulating?) circulators and they could not get enough flow thru the loop to work thru the monoflow tee. the baseboard heated fine but the kickspaces did not. i change to 2 scoop tees on each rather than one and it worked.
other than that, i have no experience with those fancy- shmancy circulators.

They don't work on monoflo tees. They require a lot of flow. That's why most of them were done with series 100 circs. The delta t circ should work fine with his setup, as long as he's off a manifold. The circ will adjust its speed to leave the right amount of heat in the rooms. It may qualify for an efficiency rebate also. It's worth checking into...I think MA had a $100 rebate.
