 water main leak getting worse?
Author: ddbbp (KS)

I found a slow leak at my main shutoff valve. Its at a threaded joint and not the packing nut. Cant take it all apart myself to fix.

At this point the joint is moist and I only see a very miniscule bead of water... its not dripping off the joint.

Obviously it needs to be replaced/fixed but I cant have someone out till next week....

Can I assume its been like this for a long time and wont be getting worse or can threaded joints like this just completely fail. get worse overnight and start spewing water....

since this is the main (the only way to stop it is at the curb) I am very nervous.... should I be?

Make sure your water dept has a 24 hour service department or will lend you a curb key so that in an emergency you can turn off your own waters.

Without seeing the venting, it is most difficult to advise.
Best Wishes

ddbbp, relax... it probably has been like that for years. don't worry. short of jumping on the pipe or driving an F450 over it, it will not change in a weeks time.

(not a plumber)

With so little water visible, is it possible this is condensation? Are you in a humid area?
